Make Custom Clear Labels with Packing Tape

Clear stickers look great on windshields and other transparent surfaces, but printing your own costs quite a bit. With a little elbow grease, you can make custom clear labels for a fraction of the price.

You’ll need access to a laser printer (inkjet printers won’t do) to print your label on a regular sheet of paper. You’ll also need clear packing tape, a bowl of water, a spoon, and scissors. Make sure your printed label is not larger than your packing tape.

Stick the tape on the label, and use the spoon to smoothen it. Cut it with the scissors, and soak it in the bowl of water for a few minutes. Once it’s soaked, rub away the paper with your finger, and let the sticker dry. You’ll have a clear sticker, ready to go.

Make an Umami-Packed Pesto with Seaweed

Make an Umami-Packed Pesto with Seaweed

There are a lot of reasons to eat seaweed—it’s good for you, it’s good for the environment, etc.—but I mostly eat it because I like the taste. It has a savory, slightly funky flavor that’s great in sushi, soups, and salads, but I’m particularly interested in the seaweed pesto from Epicurious.

The recipe below uses kombu, basil, and arugula, but you can get creative and use pretty much any green, even radish and carrot tops. From there, it’s pretty much the same ol’ pesto song and dance: olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, and lemon, all whirled together in the food processor. Mix it in rice, spread it on bread, or use it as a marinade for meat or fish.

Roasting Ginger Makes It More Flavorful Than Ever

Roasting Ginger Makes It More Flavorful Than Ever

I love ginger, and use it in every dish I possibly can, both sweet and savory. I thought I knew all the ginger tricks—I even make my own sushi ginger—but there was one preparation that was missing from my life: roasted ginger.

http://skillet.lifehacker.com/make-your-own-…

I’m actually terribly embarrassed I didn’t think of this myself. Roasting makes everything better, and ginger plays very well with browned, caramelized, and toasted flavors, so roasting ginger should have been a no-brainer. It’s also beyond simple to make. Just place a hunk of unpeeled ginger in your oven, turn the broiler on, and walk away for 45 minutes. Once it’s browned, with little burnt spots dotting its skin, take it out, let it cool a bit, and puree the whole thing, skin and all.

If you’re wondering what this flavor-packed paste is good for, the answer is “every damn thing.” Smear it on roast chicken, mix it into a compound butter, bake it into cookies, shake it into a cocktail, or blend it into a salad dressing. The possibilities are vast and exciting.

Delicata Squash Rings Are the Ultimate Fall Snack

Delicata Squash Rings Are the Ultimate Fall Snack

I like squash, but I’m never excited about squash. Actually, let me rephrase that: I’m not usually excited about squash, but I am very excited about these fried delicata squash rings from Honestly Yum.

These things are basically like onion rings, except heartier, sweeter, and more substantial. You don’t even have to peel the squash beforehand, just slice it into rings and coat them in a batter made of rice flour, beer, vodka, baking soda, and salt. They fry up super light and crispy, making them an irresistible, comforting, decidedly fall snack or side.
